Show hypnosis and hypnosis tricks

I never realised that hypnosis could have such a beautiful effect on some people.

Derren Brown taught me this in one episode of his TV show

Derren Brown is an english TV mind specialist of sorts. It is quite hard to pin down exactly what kind of performer he is, but he does use to hypnosis and suggestion techniques in his shows.

In this particular show he was working with a young lady, who we were told had never played the piano before. His challenge was to get her to play a concert performance to an audience of about 150 people within fortnight.

Over the next 2 weeks he worked with her, giving her regular hypnotherapy sessions in order to for her to become a concert pianist. As the days went on the girl was becoming increasingly nervous about playing and wanted to pull out of the concert, but Derren Brown convinced her to stay on.

After much persuasion she did eventually perform and she was amazing. I couldn't believe that someone could be hypnotised to play like a concert pianist in just 2 weeks, but she did. I started to think I'd quite like to be hypnotised to become a martial arts black belt! Sadly you can't make a novice pianist play like Rachmaninov in 2 weeks through just the power of suggestion. What had actually taken place was far more wonderful than that.

Before she began the sessions the lady was already a concert standard pianist, but had completely lost the will to play and love for her art. She was hypnotised her to think that she really couldn't play. So when she did play the concert it was such a glorious experience that she fell in love with her art again. She was interviewed a few weeks later and was still absolutely passionate about the piano.

I love this episode it is for me a great TV moment, it showed how beautifully creative some people can be with hypnosis.

hypnosis for relaxation

What do you think of when you hear the word “hypnosis”? A hypnotist swinging a pocket watch in front of the unsuspecting victims eyes telling her that her eyelids are getting heavy? Or maybe you think about a hypnotized person making a fool of himself cackling like a chicken on stage? Modern hypnosis as we know it probably started with Franz Anton Mesmer (Mesmerism) in the 1700s.  In the 1800s, James Braid, a surgeon and physician, coined the phrase "hypnotism". Far more than just a "parlor game" or comedy routine, hypnosis has a variety of benefits. One of the most common reasons people pursue hypnosis is for relaxation.  But does it work?

Hypnosis definitely got off on the wrong foot when it was used to make people do silly things as a form of entertainment.  Unfortunately, many people have no idea that it is actually a very beneficial and medically proven technique.  But, don't just take my word for it.

Harvard Medical School ran a study with 236 women referred for a breast biopsy.  They separated the women into three groups.  The first group received standard medical care.  The second group received structured empathic attention.  The third group underwent self-hypnotic relaxation during their procedures.

Here is what they found: The women who practiced self-hypnosis were the only ones who had a decrease in anxiety and they also had the largest decrease in pain of all three groups.  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16959427

If these women could get such terrific results under incredibly stressful circumstances, just imagine what you can achieve using hypnosis for relaxation?

A poll by the American Psychological Association found that 77% of respondents said they had experienced physical stress symptoms in the previous month. 73% stated they had experienced psychological stress. Between our family obligations, our work, and the current state of the economy and society in general, it’s no wonder so many people feel stressed out.

But, there is help. It’s quick, easy, affordable, safe and effective: relaxation hypnosis. You can take advantage of this method by visiting a professional hypnotherapist, or right in the comfort of you own home with professionally recorded CD’s. So, if you’re feeling a bit stressed, consider a medically proven alternative to prescription drugs or just “toughing it out” – hypnosis for relaxation.

Stop smoking with hypnosis

I have only ever have had one hypnosis session in my life, it was to give up smoking and it was successful. It was done by a local man in his 50s whose office was his front room.

I remember sitting down in his very comfortable leather swivel chair, him asking me to close my eyes and relax. I was unable to do this because I was too busy fighting the urge not swivel!

He continued to talk in a slow deep voice, about something to do with counting down and stairs, I can’t quite recall what he said, I was thinking about what was going to happen on the soap opera “EastEnders” that night.

Strangely I can’t remember anything else of the experience except giving the guy £20 and not wanting to smoke.

The next day I didn’t have any cravings, not even a little pang, the hypnosis had totally worked. The only problem was, that I really didn’t want to give up in the first place. I loved smoking; I was just doing it for my friends and family.

I felt resentful that Id stopped something I loved for other people. I decided, even though I was no longer addicted I was going to start again! The session cost £20, which was the about the cost of 2 weeks worth of cigarettes. I would have to give up for that length of time to get my money back. So, a fortnight of absolutely no cravings later I sparked up a cigarette. I was MR “self assured” smoking man again.

What an idiot I was! I could have easily stopped after my hypnosis session, but instead continued for another 10years! Only when my friend lent me a hypnosis CD did I finally quit.

Does hypnosis work with motivation?

Does hypnosis work with motivation? I know it does... I could be a lazy so and so. I found it hard to do anything without some kind of incentive, e.g. tidying up my flat could only be done if my mum, my brother or a lady friend was coming round.

I needed to change, but I found having to use sheer conscious will power to create my motivation too tiring for a lazy person like me.

My driven friend took pity on me and lent me a motivational hypnosis CD, this was lucky, as I wasn't going to use effort to find a solution to my sloth!

I took it home got comfortable on my unmade bed and put the CD on. Great I thought, I could let my subconscious do the work, which to me is like getting someone else to work for you.

I found it relaxing, so much so I fell asleep (Nowadays I relax and wake up refreshed at the end of the disk).

I woke up about 20 minutes later; did I instantly feel like doing 10 things at once? Was I like a Tony Robbins after a double espresso? Not really. I just got up and tidied my flat, no one was coming round but it needed doing, I didn't really think about it.

Next day I woke up at 8am feeling good, didn't sleep in until my usual 9.30. I thought I haven't been for a run in the last few days, so I got ready and went running.

Since I have been using Hypnosis am I still a lazy so and so? YES!

I still don't like to do anything that takes effort. Just doing things like paying bills, the laundry or going for a run, doesn’t take any effort anymore.

Shock-induction

Here I found a very intersting video which demonstrates the effectiveness of shock inductions:

When the subject is shocked you have a very small time frame to give him the suggestions to sink into a deep sleep.

Elman induction

In this article I will give you an understanding of how the Ellman induction works.

Lets start with the induction :

„Take a deep breath in and hold it for a few seconds.

(If your client closes his eyes you should stop the induction and restart it because your client has exactly to do the things you want him to do.)

Allow your mind to close your eyes while you are breathing out and relax every muscle you can feel in your body. Allow your whole body to relax as much as possible, right now.

Now you can concentrate your attention on the small muscles around your eyes and relax them so much that they can’t move anymore.

While you are totally relaxed you can find out that you can’t open your eyelids anymore.

Try to test them. They can’t move !“

Now there are 3 possible situations:

-The client can’t open his eyelids and you can continue with the induction

-If the client opens his eyelids you can say: „Well done, you have proved that you can open your eyes. You have proved that you have the full control over your body. You open your eyes every day. Now you can prove me that you can relax your eyes so much that they stay closed.

-If the client doesn’t test his eyelids you should repeat this step.

„Maybe this relaxation can spread your whole body. Make sure that your whole body is totally relaxed. From your head to the tips of your toes.

I don’t know if you already noticed that this relaxation can become deeper and deeper.

In a moment I will command you to open and to your eyes immediately.

Opening your eyes can relax your body even more and more. If you close your eyes you can sink 10 times deeper in relaxation.

Open your eyes now, close them again and feel how deep your relaxation can be.

Maybe you can imagine how falling in a deeper state of trance could feel like.

In a moment I will tell you to open and close your eyes again and you know that you easily can double the relaxation if you close your eyes.

Well done. Now relax every single muscle in your body.“

This technique is called fractionation. Repeat it a few times to deepen your clients state of trance.

„Now I will lift up your right hand and let it fall. This hand will be so relaxed that it will simply fall down. But don’t try to help me! You have to stay totally passive and let me do the lifting.

When your hand falls down you will immediately sink ten times deeper into trance.

(lift the hand up)

While your hand falls down you can allow your body to sink deeper into trance.“

Hypnosis and the human brain

In order to have a basic understanding of one's conscious and subconscious mind, one must comprehend a few simple facts about the human mind & the human brain.

The conscious mind & human will are often overrated. Hypothetically, if one's mind, knowledge, and logical reasoning were the main parts of the brain used to organize and optimize daily life & could ultimately have the ability to check and control body sensations and behavior, the world would appear in a dramatically different light. Humans would never fail to make the right decision when needed.

Most brain functions have yet to be fully explored. However, it is known that there are very old parts of the human brain controlling all life-supporting functions subconsciously, without conscious influence..

The brain can be split into two separate segments:

The superior subconscious and

The conscious part, which consists of the mind and will

When the conscious and subconscious are in conflict, the subconscious invariably wins! Our conscious mind simply does not have the ability to win against our subconscious beliefs.

For example, many women share the goal of reducing body fat. The will to achieve this goal is present ,along with the knowledge on how to do so. However, these women may inevitable fail. Sooner or later, the subconscious mind will will control the idea of how they should look and will succeed in this fight, maintaining the weight where the subconscious deems healthy and appropriate.

This is where hypnosis comes into play. You can communicate with subconscious parts and change your habits !
